Navigating change can be overwhelming, especially when we regularly encounter new challenges and feel the pressure of staying relevant in day-to-day business. While there is no key that will magically unlock your full potential, cultivating a growth mindset can empower you to take steps and create a roadmap unique to you.

Fixed Mindset vs. Growth Mindset
Imagine a world where your intelligence and abilities are fixed and predetermined at birth. Skills are innate and unchangeable, challenges are threats to self-worth, and setbacks are proof of your limitations. This is a strong example of a fixed mindset. It sounds like this, “They are criticizing my work because I’m not good enough” and this, “I can’t solve this problem.” This mindset can be particularly detrimental in industries like tech where change is constant and new skills are necessary. A fixed mindset leads to:
  • Stagnation: A reluctance to learn new things can make it difficult to keep up with the pace of innovation.
  • Fear of Failure: The fear of looking incompetent can prevent you from exploring outside of your comfort zone. In fact, research shows [https://www.latimes.com/health/la-he-scared-20151031-story.html ] that millions of people suffer from fear of failure.
  • Limited Opportunities: By believing your abilities are fixed, you may not pursue career advancement or new challenges that broaden your horizons.

On the other hand, a growth mindset is adaptable. This mindset views intelligence, talent, and abilities as possibilities for development through effort and learning. According to IBX, only 40 percent [Read more here] of people have a growth mindset.

It sounds like, “This is a tough problem, so I will try a different approach” and this, “I can solve this problem.” This mindset embraces the nature of rapid change and is characterized by:

  • Continuous Learning
  • Resilience
  • Openness to Feedback
  • Goal-Oriented
4 ways to cultivate a growth mindset
Challenge negative thought patterns and self-talk: We all have an inner voice. It tends to creep in when we face doubts, when we see limitations, and can show up in social settings. It’s important to be mindful of your inner voice and consciously reframe these thoughts.
  • Replace words like "can't", "but", and "never" with "can", "and", and "will".
  • Focus on and look for evidence that contradicts your negative thoughts.
  • Acknowledge your inner critic, rephrase thoughts to emphasize learning and growth, and move on.

Pursue knowledge: In 2024, it is easier than ever to learn new things with a plethora of online platforms and immersive industry conferences and workshops.

  • Leverage online learning platforms like Coursera [https://www.coursera.org/], edX, Skillshare [https://www.skillshare.com/en/] and HubSpot Academy [https://academy.hubspot.com/] to learn new skills at your pace.
  • Tailor your learning path to your specific career goals and aspirations. Don't just follow trends.
  • Celebrate your milestones, big and small.

Reframe challenges to opportunity: Challenges are opportunities to learn and grow. They teach you what to adjust, how to reframe, and help build resilience.

  • When facing a new challenge, take a step back. Analyze the situation by considering the pros, cons, and core opportunity(ies). Then identify the skills or knowledge required to succeed.
  • Embrace constructive feedback. It is a chance to identify areas for improvement.
  • Consider seeking advice from people who are achieving the results you aspire to achieve.

Find & create your village: There is a power that comes when you surround yourself with people who encourage you to think and challenge yourself outside of your comfort zone. These can come in the form of online communities, professional organizations, and hobbyist clubs.

  • Engage in online forums and groups dedicated to your niche or areas of interest.
  • Seek mentorship and sponsorship. These are people that understand the challenges and opportunities you face.
  • Surround yourself with supportive friends, colleagues, and family who encourage you to learn and grow.
