The Power of Mentorship & Allyship and Supporting Women
By Taylor Valentine, Marketing Specialist, The Channel Company
- Allyship is the active support for the rights of a minority or marginalized group without being a member of it.
- Mentorship is the guidance provided by a mentor, especially an experienced person in a company or educational institution.
As we advance in our careers, it's essential to remember our roots as women and the importance of fostering a supportive community. Supporting women builds growth, confidence, and long-term success — not just for individuals but for entire organizations and communities.
I’ll admit — I lost sight of the value of community and mentorship after COVID when working from home became the norm. My workdays were filled with emails, Zoom calls, and “circling back” on projects. I wasn’t part of any real community; it was me versus the work, and everyone else was included in that equation. It wasn’t until I joined The Channel Company and became involved with the Women of the Channel Leadership Network (WOTC LN) that I realized how much I had been missing. By not engaging with and supporting other women, I had done myself a disservice. When I think back, I can recall moments where I spoke up in meetings where I was the only woman… I advocated for my ideas, and tried to make a difference — only to be dismissed or ignored. That left me feeling unworthy and diminished my confidence. But through the support of other women, I’ve rebuilt that sense of belonging and empowerment.
Women feel more capable and empowered when they have someone to guide and support them. Speaking to other women about our ideas and backing each other up strengthens our confidence. Women with mentors and allies are also more likely to advance in their careers. Having someone advocate for you in professional spaces can open doors to new opportunities and encourage career growth and feeling supported creates a sense of belonging, leading to higher job satisfaction and retention.
When we support each other, we pave the way for future generations. Just as we needed guidance from the women before us, we have a responsibility to extend that same support to the next generation.
Being a strong mentor or ally doesn’t require grand gestures — small, consistent actions make a difference. Listening and being present without judgment helps women feel valued and understood. Sharing knowledge and resources allows others to navigate challenges and opportunities more easily. Creating opportunities, such as advocating for women in leadership roles, promotions, and key projects, helps break down barriers and ensures that women’s voices are heard. Challenging bias when you see discrimination or unfair treatment fosters a more equitable environment. And celebrating wins — recognizing and elevating the achievements of other women — reinforces a culture of support and success.
When women support each other, it creates a stronger, more inclusive work environment. Successful mentorship and allyship lead to more women in leadership roles, higher performance, and increased job satisfaction. But the impact doesn’t stop there — it extends into our communities and shapes future generations.
I encourage you to become a mentor or ally in your personal and professional life. Empowering women creates a chain reaction of success and strength. When women uplift each other, we all rise.
"When women uplift each other, we all rise."
