Blog: Remember To Find the Delights Around You, Or Just Listen to Taylor Swift
by CJ Fairfield, Senior Associate Editor, CRN, The Channel Company
You ever just…wake up angry?
I didn’t sleep well last night but surprisingly had a great dream that I was at Taylor Swift’s The Eras Tour concert (which I’ve never been to because I couldn’t secure tickets so I rented it on demand for $19.89 last December) and she had me on stage.
In my dream I was just up there with a few other fans dancing freely when Taylor asked me what song I wanted her to sing next. I repeatedly said “New Romantics,” because I could just see myself belting out the lyrics onstage, but she said no? We settled on “Are You Ready For It.”
Even after dreaming I was on stage with Taylor Swift, yes I’m a Swiftie, I still woke up angry. Maybe if she played “New Romantics”….
But I woke up hungry, well…hangry actually, a little bloated, it’s STILL cold outside (I live in the Northeast), I have a full plate of work to get through and I need to clean my bathroom and my floors (procrastination is alive and well there).
But the thing is, I have so much to be grateful for, so much to wake up happy to.
I live alone in a cute little bungalow-style house by the beach, just me and the pup. I wake up to a quiet home everyday, pure bliss.
To mend my curmudgeon-ness, I decided to keep my head down and focus on work early this morning. The distraction of work will do the trick.
But then I remembered to find the little joys all around me. I remember a few Women of the Channel shows back one speaker talked about finding little delights and sharing it with others. My coworker Gina Narcisi and I occasionally still practice this. We’ll send out a quick text about something as simple as the first sip of coffee on a warm sunny morning. “Delight!” we’ll say.
Amid the morning work, I found small delights: my dog’s adorable face, the sunshine beaming through the window, a friend’s text, finishing the laundry, my delicious cappuccino.
And yes, while writing this I’ve been listening to Taylor Swift. Delight!
I feel the anger starting to dissipate.
So if you ever just wake up on the wrong side of the bed, find the small joys….and maybe listen to Taylor Swift.
Maybe this complete 180 will motivate me to clean my floors tonight. If I say it here, it’ll hold me accountable.
I will clean my floors and bathroom tonight…while playing “New Romantics.”
